About campus recruitment training

Engineering colleges have multiplied in number in the last decade; mostly, due to the demand for engineering graduates in our country. However, today the scenario has changed, there are more engineering graduates coming out of colleges that there are jobs available for these engineers. Moreover, more than 50% engineers coming out of the engineering colleges are not found to be employable by corporates. Therefore companies reaching various campuses for recruiting suitable engineers take entrance tests before they recruit any candidate.

Companies spend a lot of money in training a candidate after the candidate joins it, therefore a company needs to select those candidates who are employment ready. Being employment ready from the persepective of engineers is not only about being technically sound but also about having the necessary softskills, aptitude which helps engineers do well in companies.

Campus recruitment process

Though there are minor variations, the campus recruitment process broadly follows the following pattern/stages

  • Stage-1- Aptitude Test
  • Stage-2-  Group Discussion or any of its variants
  • Stage-3- Personal and technical interview

Aptitude Test

Aptitude Tests examine students on Quantitative ability, Reasoning, Verbal Ability and Basic Computer Skills. These tests are well structured and range from 45 minutes to 90 minutes in duration. The kind of questions that are asked or the topics that are tested depends entirely on the company conducting the test. Each company has its own pattern.111

Group Discussion

A group discussion is conducted by a company to test the students’ ability to communicate, students’ social skills and their ability to think clearly. Generally, companies present a group of candidates with a topic and ask them to discuss if for around 10 – 15 minutes.

Personal interview is the last stage of the selection process; it may take place in one stage only of more than one stage. Generally, where the interview is held in more than one stage, the companies may have a technical interview round followed by an HR round.

Candidates may be eliminated in each of these stages

Eligibility criteria

Each company has its own eligibility criteria. The criteria is often defined in terms of age, qualification, year of graduation, % marks scored in Class Xth, XIIth, UG/PG. The basic eligibility criteria for entry level position in different IT companies is BE/Btech in engineering with some cutoff percentage of marks scored. This cutoff is different for different companies.
